The statuary hall

Statuary Hall at the Pamphilj Gallery

When does an art museum become a piece of art itself? I invite you to walk with me down the Pamphilj Gallery’s Statuary Hall. The piece in the banner is the statue of Jacob wrestling the angel. It is in the end of the hall n you’re left as you walk through. It was one of my favorite pieces in Rome and the main reason to attend the Pamphilj Gallery. However despite housing four Caravaggios and a Bernini bust, you must look at the room you are in.

The Pamphilj is a floor to ceiling art canvas.
The hallways almost overwhelm the art works in many instances. Here is the view down the main hall of statues. The ceilings depict stories from antiquity, and were obviously hand painted by the artisans employed by the powerful Pamphilj Family of Rome.

I particularly liked the chandeliers. I’m not much of a chandelier person but the ones in that hall certainly belong there and compliment the surroundings. I do not recall visiting a place that drew the art fan into it as I found in the Pamphilj.

If there is a Bernini around, you know I’m going to mention it. This is a bust of Pope Innocent X. There are two, the first had a flaw that caused a crack, and the second is below

Bernini Made two, and both are under the roof of the Pamphilj.

Thank you for walk in the Pamphilj Gallery with me. Be a Wanderer.
