High Shoals Falls

High Shoals Falls

Today I want to write about one of my favorite places that I have ever been to for hiking. It is located in the South Mountains State Park in Burke County North Carolina. It features two waterfalls relatively near to each other. Big Bear Falls is about a 3/4 mile hike to your right, and High Shoals Falls is a little over a mile to the left on the trail.

The hike is a fairly tough one especially towards the end. There is several improvements that have been made to the trail to help on climbing rises and on rainy days. I prefer to hike on rainy days, I don’t have to worry about too much light or shadow when photographing.

Steps and stairs especially on the last part of the hike to the falls really helped out.
The trail can be tough, and I had one of several tumbles that day. It looks something like this.
When I fall, I take a photograph.

About 200 yards from High Shoals Falls there is a crossing over the creek. You must take it in order to see the Falls from the platform next to the waterfall.
Crossing to go to the platform next to the Falls.
Beautiful hike that takes you along the riverbank.

The hike is probably rated intermediate. My knees were still injured and I had to rest ever so often, but I should have no problem with it now. I did drink quite a bit of water while I was there, so I recommend taking plenty. There was no one except one jogger on the trail that day, and he disappeared quickly. There is no admission fee to visit. There is camping, grills available as well as picnic tables.
Visit their website for more information. See you out on the trail.
